Spring (April–May): Adult moths emerge from cocoons as weather warms up to mate and lay eggs.
Summer (June–August): Peak activity occurs; warm temperatures speed up the life cycle, leading to aggressive feeding by larvae and a second generation.
Autumn (September–November): Activity continues indoors, and cooler outdoor air drives moths deeper into homes where damage is often first noticed.
Winter (December–March): While outdoor activity drops, central heating in UK homes keeps indoor larvae active year-round.
The best way to repel moths from your wardrobe this season is to combine cleanliness, storage and deterrents:
Wash or dry-clean clothes before storing them — moth larvae are attracted to traces of food, sweat and body oils.
Try cedar or lavender — sachets, blocks or rings can help deter adult moths. Refresh or replace them regularly.
Store vulnerable clothes airtight — especially wool, cashmere, silk and other natural fibres.
Vacuum your wardrobe thoroughly — pay attention to corners, cracks, shelves and underneath furniture.
Inspect clothes regularly — look for small holes, larvae, webbing or shed skins.
Avoid overcrowding — leaving some space makes it easier to spot an infestation and clean properly.
Air and occasionally move stored clothes — don't leave natural-fibre garments undisturbed for months.
One of the most highly effective and natural ways of deterring moths is by using the scent of cedar wood oil in your home. Store clothing in sealed containers such as chests, plastic storage containers, suitcases, where moths can't get to them. Zip wool garments into garment bags. Be sure to move wool socks them out of your sock drawer during the warmer months.
Moths prefer moist environments, so store your clothes in a dry area of your home. Storing clothes in the attic or under your bed is definitely preferable to storing clothes in the basement or garage.
Moths gravitate towards dirt, so vacuum your carpets and skirting boards regularly to prevent an infestation or eliminate an existing infestation.
If you're dealing with a current infestation, change your vacuum bag regularly to ensure you're getting the larvae out of your home.
If you find moths on clothing, place the affected garment in the freezer for 24 hours to kill any active larvae.
